چکیده

Robotic wire-feed additive manufacturing technology is possible to directly fabricate metallic overhangs without support structures through multi-direction deposition. To automatically produce complex components with overhangs, an efficient multi-direction slicing algorithm to slice CAD models into a set of proper layers is required. This paper reports the concept and implementation of a new strategy for multi-direction slicing of CAD models represented in STL format. An input STL model is firstly decomposed into sub-volumes using a simple curvaturebased volume decomposition method. Accordingly, each sub-volume is able to be built in a single direction. Then a depth-tree structure is introduced to regroup the decomposed sub-volumes and provide the slicing sequences. Consequently, sub-volumes are separately sliced along their associated appropriate build directions in sequence. The proposed multi-direction slicing strategy is shown to be simple and efficient for STL models with sharp edges.

Bio-additive manufacturing is a promising tool to fabricate porous scaffold structures for expediting the tissue regeneration processes. Unlike the most traditional bulk material objects, the microstructures of tissue and organs are mostly highly anisotropic, heterogeneous, and porous in nature. However, modelling the internal heterogeneity of tissues/organs structures in the traditional CAD en...

Slicing Algorithm of VRML Model in Rapid Prototyping

VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) as an international standard for Virtual Reality, has already been widely adopted for graphical representation of 3D objects over the Web. Adopting VRML model in RP (Rapid Prototyping) can reduce the precision loss which is caused by triangulation in generating STL file. Hence exploring a slicing method and software for VRML model is significant to impro...

Additive Manufacturing – IDH Perspective

Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies build near-net shape components one layer at a time using data from 3D CAD models. AM technologies are the result of evolution of work in 3D printing and stereolithography (the STL files used to convert 3D CAD to layers for building parts come from stereolithography terminology) and could revolutionize many sectors of U.S. manufacturing by reducing compo...
